Transportation in Lisbon

Once in Lisbon, you might realize that a lot of things are in walking distance. However, the alternative of using a means of transportation is sometimes the more comfortable option. What kind of transport options are there in Lisbon to get from A to B? In this article we will give you a little insight.

Public transportation

Public transportation within the city is divided into metro, bus, tram and ferry. If you are staying in Lisbon for a longer period of time, it is worth getting a monthly pass to be able to use all the public transportation flexibly. The cost is 30€ for the Navegante Municipal monthly pass. To get a monthly pass, you have to register once in the system. This works via a few individual metro stations such as the one in Marquês de Pombal. The cost for this is 5€. After that, you can get a card yourself every month at any machine. Individual trips cost 1.50€ each plus a one-time fee of 50ct for the rechargeable metro card. It should be noted here that if you change between two different means of transportation (for example, metro and bus), another trip will be charged.

The tram and the ferry are nice to explore the city, you need accordingly a little longer to get to your destination, however, as it is well known, sometimes the way can be the goal. With the tram you can see many monuments of the city of Lisbon, because unlike the metro it goes outside (not to forget about the famous Tram28). It is also a good option to go up the many hills that are all too common in Lisbon. With this, you won‘tget out of breath that fast  and also arrive quickly at the top. Lisbon’s ferries are used to get to the other side of the Tejo River. From Cais do Sodré you can easily get to Almada, Seixal and Barreiro without a car.

If you want to leave the city and go to the beach in the direction of Cascais, for example, it is a great option to take the Cascais line. It leaves from Cais do Sodre and goes along the coast to Cascais. Little hint: Perfect for beach hopping. Here, however, the monthly ticket for 30€ is no longer valid, but you have to get the „Navegante Metropolitano“ monthly ticket for 40€. If you like to go to the beach and want to discover a lot around Lisbon, the card is very well recommended because you can even get to Setúbal or Sintra with it.

Uber & co.

Parallel to the public transportation, there are also some providers such as Uber, which provide transportation by car. Other brands are Bolt and Freenow, which are mainly used in Lisbon. You can get rides here for as little as €2.50. Depending on the time of day, you can get away very cheaply. For example, if you want to go to the beach on the Costa da Caparica (duration about 20 minutes), it is a good idea to share an Uber with several people (10-20€ per ride), because public transport takes a long time.

If you want to explore the city itself, there is also the possibility to rent e-scooters and e-bikes via Bolt. These can be found everywhere in the city and you can use them very flexibly and cheaply.
